Lesson plans can be used individually or as a unit to teach Middle School students safe practices to manage our environment in a healthy sustainable way. The lessons introduce the concept of Integrated Pest Management. This is an environmental strategy that focuses on proper management of landscapes to reduce the use of pesticides in the environment. Present serious environmental issues addressed are the problems of leaching chemicals into our ground water, and increased pollution into our waterways from storm water runoff. The lessons include soil analysis, life cycles of plants and insects, how to properly read chemical labels, decision making for sustainable plant health, ground water concerns, and site assessment.
